小柄に挿す片刃の小さな刃物を、「小刀」「小刀穂」という。刀の鞘に沿えて挿し、紙を切ったり、戦場では取った首の耳に穴を開け底に紐を通したり、太刀の刃こぼれを削ったり矢の羽を切ったり等、万能ナイフとしてマルチな用途に用いられたようである。歴史は古く、正倉院御物の刀子が小刀にあたる。刀の鞘に挿すようになったのはおそらく平安頃からではないかと思われる。『享保名物帳』所載の”親子藤四郎”には、同じく粟田口吉光の作と言われる小刀がついている。埋忠明寿、相模守政常、陸奥守大道、藝州輝廣、水田國重なども名品を遺している。
一般的な小刀の長さは、水心子正秀によると「四寸（約12.1㎝）、茎の長さ二寸五分（約7.6㎝）、元幅四分二～三厘（約1.3㎝）、棟重ね八厘（約0.2㎝）」程度としている。何といってもこの小刀のいいところは、この小さな刀身の中に刀工たちの技の粋が凝縮されているところである。地鉄の鍛え、刃文、そしてものによっては刀身に施されている見事な彫刻…、まさに掌中のマスターピースといっても良いだろう。

Shoto or Shoto-ho means a short knife which is fitted with Kozuka and insert in a scabbard pocket.
It was used as an all-purpose knife for example to cut paper....
We can find the oldest pirces called "Tosu" in Shoso-in treasure.They are the rootage of Shoto.
There is a Shoto called "Oyako Toshiro" (parent and child Toshiro), which was made by Awataguchi Yoshimitsu,in "Kyoho Meibutsu cho" (Fine sword list by Kochu Hon'ami).There are well known Shoto-ho makers, for example, Umetada Myoju, Sagami no kami Masatsune, Mutsuno kami Daido, Geishu Teruhiro and Mizuta Kunishige. Of course, they are famous of fine swordsmiths too.If the smaller a Shoto-ho, more difficult a Shoto-ho works becomes.
It is cery difficult for sowrdsumith to stuff techniques in a small Shoto-ho size from 12cm - 13cm.You may understand the it is said to be a master pirce in a hand.
